Maine Cellular Coverage

Gov. John Baldacci of Maine has put forward an initiative to improve cell phone coverage in the State of Maine. The governor understands that in the year 2005, good telecommunications infrastructure is important for the growth and economic development of the state. Maine has an extensive tourism economic base, and good cellular coverage can only help. Residents of Maine would benefit from the expanded cell coverage. I have found that once you leave the Maine Turnpike, the coverage is less than ideal in many areas. Of course, this is mostly an economic decision on the part of the wireless carrier. There are not enough users, and too many miles of forest to cover. Maybe the governors initiative will help move this issue forward.

Sue who?

It has been a while since I posted last, but with the revamp of my site going on, I felt it is time to get back in the game.
The Supreme court has ruled that wireless companies cannot sue towns for denying applications for building wireless facilities. Cities cannot be sued for damages for refusing to permit a cell tower. We will see what this means to the development of new wireless sites. Over the next few years, there will be more requests for building facilities, as wireless providers expanded service to provide 3G data and expanded voice coverage.
Time will tell.
